Tour South Point Douglas with artist Jordan van Sewell

October 2nd, 2011

This hike will give us a chance to take part in two very special CULTURE DAYS events – an interesting two hour guided tour of South Point Douglas with Jordan van Sewell and a stroll through the Warming Hut Display at the Forks. We meet and begin at the Forks, then take the Riverwalk (It’s finally open!) out through Juba Park along a riverside pathway to Point Douglas. We will be hiking and touring from 10 am to 2 pm. Expect to walk about 6 km.

Culture Days is a collaborative pan-Canadian volunteer movement to raise the awareness, accessibility, participation and engagement of all Canadians in the arts and cultural life of their communities.

The cradle of modern day Winnipeg is once again facing painful gentrification from wily politician/bureaucrats and artistic interlopers. Unravel this dichotomy with an eye to the future and one eye watching your back. You may see the ongoing construction of the new Disraeli Bridge and hear about the old. Stumble through riverbank encampments where hoboes once served up vats of graveyard stew, (note:no stew will be served.) Feel the ground shake beneath you as a freight train rumbles by.

Tour guide and organizer, Jordan van Sewell, will begin the tour at the clubhouse of the South Point Douglas Millionaires’ Club- 48 Annabella Street and conclude with an extensive tour of Galeria Luz- 43 Curtis Street showcasing the work of your tour guide. Memberships in the Millionaire’s Club and purchases from the gallery will be welcome…… one tour only.

Before heading out to Point Douglas we’ll check out past entries to Warming Huts: An Art + Architecture Exposition on Ice including “Carcass” (Sputnik Architecture in collaboration with artist Jonathon Pylypchuk), “Apparition”, (Antoine Predock Architect in collaboration with Scatliff+Miller+Murray Landscape Architects) and “Jellyfish” (Patkau Architects).

Free studio tours offer Winnipeggers a glimpse into artists’ creative realms

June 1st, 2011

Often I stand at my bench and listen to the radio…pick up on some news item or listen to a song, and from the lyric put together a ceramic piece. Dealing with popular culture goes way back for me. – from “A look inside the world of Jordan Van Sewell”

Year round, Jordan Van Sewell creates his signature ceramic art in the privacy of his backyard studio in the Point Douglas neighbourhood of Winnipeg. But this weekend Jordan is opening up the door of his studio. You have a chance to meet the artist in his creative space—and see his original art up close.

And there are a lot more artists to chose from. It’s all part of Winnipeg’s In Plain View. This weekend you can take an studio tour and meet artists working in many media – paintings, ceramics, sculpture, watercolour, printmaking, glass art, jewellery-making, wearable art and more. And here’s a phrase Winnipeggers love to hear: It’s free.
